University of Birmingham & Canvas - John Heath

PRO VICE CHANCELLOR INTERVIEW
John Heath, University of Birmingham's Pro Vice Chancellor for Estates and Infrastructure, talks about why the University chose Canvas and how it's already changing many people's attitudes towards virtual learning – including his own.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT CANVAS

“My first impression was that it was fast.”

“It was very much easier for me as a teacher. In the past there’s been a lot of cynicism about using web-based learning platforms, which I think will be overcome by using Canvas. Self-directed learning and the ability to explore things in greater detail is facilitated by Canvas.”

Taunton Southwood
Professor of Pediatric Rheumatology, University of Birmingham

“We looked at
every single platform out there.”

“What amazed me was that when people got their hands on Canvas they became very excited very quickly. We aspire to ensure our learning experience is ahead of the curve. In that sense, Canvas is proving to be a very exciting product.”

John Heath
Pro Vice Chancellor for Estates and Infrastructure, University of Birmingham

“I was really impressed with the initial view of it.”

“When I first started using Canvas … what I really liked was that all the modules I was involved in, both as a student and a teacher, were in one place.”

Laura Healy
Doctoral Researcher, Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation Sciences,
University of Birmingham

“The reception of Canvas has been very, very positive.”

“People who wouldn’t use the old system are using Canvas. In a very short period of time we’re seeing greater uptake and we’re seeing greater engagement from the student side of things as well.”

Joe Berry
College of Social Sciences eLearning Team, University of Birmingham

“Students that I work with loved Canvas."

“Students love the way that they can get messages on their phones. They don’t have to be sitting in front of their computer. You can be in Canvas but not be in Canvas; it can come to you.”

Matt Bridge
Senior Lecturer in Coaching & Sports Science, University of Birmingham

“I’m on it all the
time really.”

“I’m on Canvas quite a lot of the time because our lecturers are really good at constantly updating things. It’s got all the timetables on it and also with announcements it’s a great reference point.”

Rebekah Myatt
Third-year Law student,
University of Birmingham

“There was a snowball effect.”

“Once [academics] saw it they were very keen to get off the old system and get on to Canvas and there was a snowball effect.”

David Deighton
Chief Enterprise Architect,
University of Birmingham
